An artist of Mexican origin, Hisae Ikenaga has been developing a multifaceted body of work since the 2000s, borrowing its codes from the classic vocabulary of sculpture and architecture, which she twists with humor. The artist collects, transforms and/or combines objects from the industrial world and our domestic environment with ceramic figures to create hybrid compositions. In a subtle play of accumulation and collage of shapes that are sometimes abstract, sometimes recognizable, Ikenaga attributes to these “modern” objects a new functionality echoing their aesthetic and mechanical properties. A transformation of volumes and materials that she extends in her practice to traditional ceramic know-how (from modeling to extrusion). Hisae Ikenaga therefore transposes these heritages into the sphere of strangeness, in which the organic and the inorganic, fragility and solidity, functionality and the sculptural, the modernist and the artisanal confront each other.
The artist's first monographic exhibition in a Luxembourg institution, Hisae Ikenaga will present a selection of works testifying to his fields of research on materials and forms begun during his last years alongside new productions.
