The “Mäertchen” finds its origins in the Octave, a religious festival to honor the Virgin Mary who is the patroness of the city and the Grand Duchy during which pilgrims from the entire country and the Greater Region go to Luxembourg City. At the beginning the Octave lasted 8 days (hence its name), today it extends over 2 weeks between Easter and Pentecost, starting on the 3rd Saturday after Easter.

Originally, the “Mäertchen” offered fasting pilgrims, most of whom came from rural areas and rarely went to town, the opportunity to have a small snack, while doing their shopping in town, from leaving mass.

Although the “Mäertchen” has today taken on the appearance of a popular market with its game stands and fairground attractions, it is far from losing its charm and attractiveness. Every year, thousands of visitors go there to enjoy the friendly atmosphere that invades the city center during the 16 days of “Mäertchen”.
