Conference: “Charles Gaspar and Pictorialism”
The photographic work of Charles Gaspar is part of the first international movement of photographic art that history has remembered under the name “pictorialism” and which developed in Europe and the United States from approximately 1890 to 1914. . This movement of unprecedented scale in the history of photography, to which hundreds of amateur photographers, most of them from the bourgeoisie, joined, institutionalized an aesthetic turning its back on the realities of the world, promoting withdrawal into oneself and states of mind and denying the photographic nature of the images, conditions required for them to be recognized as artistic. Pictorialism, the photographic equivalent of literary and pictorial symbolism, thus became the preferred means of expression of a social class which recognized itself in an image combining science, technology and art.
